Dentures consist of a plastic base that is molded & colored to look like your gums. The teeth attached to this base are most often made from a plastic acrylic. The color of both the gums & tooth parts of dentures are customized in order to ensure they look as natural as possible in your mouth.
Dentures are false teeth for someone who is missing some or all of their teeth. Depending on how many teeth are missing, dentures can come with a full set of teeth or a partial set meant to fill in gaps between any remaining teeth.
Dentures on your top jaw typically cover the ridge of bone where your teeth used to be & the roof of your mouth (what dentists call the palate). Top dentures are held in place by suction between the palate & the denture. Because there is less for them to hold on to (no palate), dentures on your bottom jaw are not quite as secure & may take a little more getting used to.
Type Of Dentures
- Temporary Dentures:
Our dental office provides temporary dentures to patients that may need it. Temporaries ensure that you have a perfect and natural-looking smile while you are waiting to get a dental bridge or dental implant. This is a great option for situations where you may have gotten a tooth knocked out on accident during a sporting event or activity. We understand no one wants to walk around with a missing tooth, in this case, temporary dentures or flippers would be an ideal solution.
- Partial Dentures:
When only a few of your teeth are missing, partial dentures are typically the best solution. Partial dentures are held in place by a plastic base that is made to look like the same color as your gums. Our dentists treat patients throughout the Chicagoland area that may need cosmetic dentistry such as partial dentures. Keep in mind that dentures are different in the fact that they are removable.

The Denture Process
Typically, the process starts with taking an impression of the mouth. From that, the dentist creates a model using dental stone as a cast. Our team may ask the patient to try several different sets of sterilized dentures to determine the ideal fit and the preferred color and size of teeth. After these selections, the dentist may make some adjustments to the cast. Then, it is sent to a dental laboratory for completion.
At the dental laboratory, technicians may create a wax version of the gum line. These technicians make the replacement teeth from a material that closely resembles real teeth known as resin. Virtually, all labs seek approval from the patient and dentist before proceeding with the finishing touches.
Following approval, the technician removes the wax and replaces it with acrylic. This looks far more realistic. This process entails boiling the wax out, drilling holes in the teeth, and injecting the acrylic. Finally, technicians clean up the teeth and polish the appliance. The entire process may require the patient to visit the dentist’s office four to five times.
Benefits of Dentures
- Eat and chew more thoroughly.
- Speak more easily.
- Smile more!
In the case of implant dentures, your dentures can also encourage bone regrowth in your jaw. Our goal is to help you feel like smiling all the time! During your consultation, we can work with you to decide which dentures option is right for you.
Aftercare
Caring for your dentures is incredibly important — just as important as caring for natural teeth. Both full & partial dentures are removable & it is not recommended that they be worn at night. This gives your gums a chance to rest & allows your saliva to naturally lubricate your gums & the rest of your mouth. Dentures need to be cleaned overnight using special denture toothpaste & a soft-bristled toothbrush or denture brush. Be careful when cleaning not to drop your dentures on a hard surface; this is a frequent cause of denture breakage. We recommend laying out a towel or filling the sink basin with water while you clean your dentures. Dentures should be soaked overnight in a denture solution to keep them moist as drying out may cause brittleness.
Frequently Asked Questions
Oxford Smiles offers complete dentures (full arch), removable partial dentures , immediate dentures , and implant-supported overdentures (Snap-On or bar-retained). Dr. Mehta will recommend the right type based on how many teeth you are missing and your bone health.
Yes. Advances in materials - premium acrylic, high-impact resins, and lifelike denture teeth - produce prosthetics that look far more natural and are lighter and more comfortable than dentures of a generation ago. Digital denture fabrication improves fit accuracy as well.
Immediate dentures are placed the same day as extractions. Conventional dentures require 8–12 weeks of healing. Dr. Mehta will recommend the approach based on your individual clinical situation and timeline expectations.
High-quality, well-fitted dentures are difficult to detect. Proper tooth size, shape, and shade selection individualized to your facial features and skin tone creates a natural look. The biggest giveaway is a loose-fitting denture that shifts when you speak - another reason fit and regular adjustments matter.
Yes. Implant-supported overdentures use 2–4 implants to anchor a full-arch denture securely. They eliminate slipping, improve chewing strength, and prevent the bone loss that causes facial collapse with traditional dentures. They are available for both upper and lower arches.

Posted on SlampaProductionsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It’s been about 6 years since I’ve been to the Dentist due to some poor experiences in the past, and I am happy to say that my dental fears have been resolved. They were so welcoming from the second I walked in the door, through the x-rays, and cleaning. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a new dentist!Posted on Stephanie BachnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. UPDATE!! I will be returning and continuing services with this practice. The doctor and her assistant today gave me a warm welcome, showed confidence in what they were doing, DID NOT RUSH, were personable , and an absolute delight. My teeth feel very good. they assured me that sometimes cleanings are fast due to proper personal care/hygiene. And that my teeth are in good shape. I’m very grateful. I will happily update this rating from 3 to five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Thank you again Following up after my first visit/cleaning. Upon walking in, The receptionist was wonderful welcoming and very sweet. She has a pleasant tone , actually smiled and greeted me with inviting eye contact even tho she was on the phone at first. She quickly signed me in and told me take a seat anywhere. I love the pothos leaves and lobby. Second person of contact: The assistant, seemed nervous; and was asking me questions but not letting me finish responding before asking the next question. Maybe she thought I was younger or have never been to the dentist in my life. The questions felt rehearsed and not genuine, like they were being recited. I will say, After the X-rays everything became more comfortable. We all laughed at one point and the service went on. The Dr. was nice but I know I’ve had better cleanings. I actually commented on how fast it was? It was too fast. I was expecting to be worked on (the actual cleaning alone) for 20 min or more , not including flossing and polishing. The manual scaling was too quick and extremely light in pressure. The crevices of my biting areas were also skipped? I know my teeth are healthy. But 10000% could be healthier and is why I scheduled. I haven’t had a cleaning for two years so I know from the coffee and non tobacco related recreations I indulge, my teeth are not** brighter than pre cleaning and look the same. My previous dentist is out of regular travel now but she was exceptional took her time and gave me a thorough cleaning , I’ve been smoking and drinking coffee for 15 years and that has never compromised my finish. I don’t want to experience pain or a dentist scraping my teeth with unnecessary force for satisfaction. I’ve just simply had better cleanings. This office is very close to my residence and it’s ideal. Also it’s a nice building, clean, aesthetic is pretty. I gave Oxford Smiles a go because of convenient location and was hoping to add a more positive review. My expectations were higher as I try to lead with positivity but, besides my expectations; you all have field related experience certifications and or degrees and should be going out of the way for patients instead of only, “going through the motions.” Dental health is no joke. Thank you so much for seeing me. I’m not over the moon, yes dissatisfied, and deserve confident hygienist who enjoys each individual experience per client.Posted on Dean SimpsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
