Dental Veneers
If chips, stains, gaps, or uneven edges are holding back your smile, dental veneers are one of the most conservative ways to fix them. A veneer is a thin, custom-shaped shell – porcelain or composite resin – bonded to the front surface of a tooth to reshape it, brighten it, or close small gaps. Because a veneer covers only the visible face of the tooth, far less enamel is removed than with a crown, which wraps the entire tooth.
At Oxford Smiles in Marlborough, Dr. Aditya Mehta plans every veneer case using digital photographs and smile analysis, so the final shape, shade, and proportions look natural next to your other teeth – not “too perfect” or overly white. Most cases take two visits: one to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and a second, one to two weeks later, to bond the finished veneers in place.
Porcelain Veneers vs. Composite Veneers: Which Is Right for You?
Both materials can correct the same range of cosmetic issues – the right choice usually comes down to durability, timeline, and budget.
Feature | Porcelain Veneers | Composite Veneers |
Material | Layered dental ceramic, custom-fabricated in a lab | Tooth-colored resin, sculpted directly on the tooth |
Appointments | Usually 2 visits (prep + bonding), 1-2 weeks apart | Often completed in a single visit |
Enamel removal | Typically ~0.3-0.7mm removed from the tooth surface | Minimal to none in many cases |
Stain resistance | Excellent – highly resistant to coffee, wine, tobacco | Good, but more prone to staining over time |
Typical lifespan | 10-20 years with proper care | 4-8 years; may need touch-ups sooner |
Repairability | Cannot be spot-repaired – a damaged veneer is replaced | Can often be repaired or polished chairside |
Best for | Long-term smile makeovers, multiple teeth | Single-tooth fixes, minor corrections, tighter budgets |
Relative cost | Higher upfront cost per tooth | Lower upfront cost per tooth |
Dental Veneer Preparation and Process
1. Consultation & Treatment Planning
At your initial visit, we assess your teeth, discuss your cosmetic goals, and determine whether veneers are the best solution for you. If veneers aren’t appropriate, we’ll recommend alternative treatments to help you achieve your desired smile.
2. Tooth Preparation & Impressions
Before placing veneers, a small amount of enamel (about 0.3-0.7mm) is gently removed from the front surface of each tooth to allow a precise fit. Mild sensitivity may occur but subsides within a few days. A dental impression is then taken and sent to a specialized lab to craft your custom veneers, and temporary veneers may be placed while you wait.
3. Veneer Application & Final Bonding
Once your custom veneers arrive, they’re permanently bonded to your teeth in a precise, multi-step process: teeth are cleaned, polished, and chemically etched to create a strong bond; the veneers are set with a color-matched bonding cement; and a curing light hardens the cement to secure each veneer in place. We finish with final adjustments so your veneers feel comfortable and look flawless.
Veneers vs. Crowns, Bonding & Whitening - What's the Difference?
Veneers are one of several ways we can improve the look of your teeth. Here’s how they compare to our other cosmetic options:
- Veneers vs. Dental Crowns: a crown covers the entire tooth and is typically used when a tooth is structurally weak, cracked, or heavily filled. A veneer covers only the front surface and is used mainly for cosmetic correction on an otherwise healthy tooth. See our Dental Crowns.
- Veneers vs. Dental Bonding: bonding uses composite resin sculpted directly onto the tooth chairside in a single visit. It costs less upfront but is generally less durable and more prone to staining than porcelain veneers. See our Dental Bonding.
- Veneers vs. Teeth Whitening: whitening changes shade only – it can’t fix chips, gaps, or tooth shape. Veneers address shape and color together. See our Teeth Whitening.
- Veneers as part of a Smile Makeover: patients wanting a more comprehensive change often combine veneers with whitening, bonding, or Invisalign. See our Smile Makeover.
How Much Do Veneers Cost?
Veneer cost depends on the material you choose, how many teeth are involved, and any prep work needed beforehand. As a general guide, composite veneers cost less per tooth upfront, while porcelain’s added durability and stain resistance carry a higher upfront cost that’s often offset by more years of wear.
Because veneers are considered elective and cosmetic, most dental insurance plans don’t cover them – though a portion may be covered if a veneer is restoring a tooth damaged by trauma or decay rather than purely improving its appearance. We accept most major insurance plans and offer flexible financing through CareCredit, Sunbit, and LendingClub, along with in-house membership plans, so cost doesn’t have to stand between you and your smile. Your exact quote is provided after your consultation and treatment plan.
Caring for Your Veneers
Veneers are an investment, and a few simple habits go a long way toward protecting them:
- Brush twice daily and floss every day, just as you would with natural teeth
- Keep up with routine cleanings and checkups so we can monitor the bond margins
- Avoid using your teeth to open packages, and skip biting into ice or very hard candy
- Wear a nightguard if you grind or clench your teeth – grinding is a leading cause of cracked veneers
- If you want a brighter smile later, ask us about whitening your natural teeth before your veneer shade is finalized – porcelain veneers can’t be whitened once placed
With consistent care, porcelain veneers typically last 10-20 years, and composite veneers 4-8 years, before a refresh is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most smile makeovers use 6–10 veneers covering the visible upper front teeth. For minor corrections (one chipped tooth), a single veneer may suffice. Dr. Mehta will use digital photographs and smile analysis to recommend the minimum number needed to achieve a symmetrical, natural result.
Traditional porcelain veneers require removing a thin layer of enamel - typically 0.5–0.7 mm - which is permanent. Prep-less or minimal-prep veneers exist for select cases where little to no enamel removal is required. Discuss reversibility concerns with Dr. Mehta during your consultation.
High-quality porcelain veneers typically last 10–20 years. Longevity depends on bite forces, oral hygiene, and habits. Wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth is strongly recommended to protect your investment.
Veneers require a minimum of two appointments: consultation and tooth preparation (including placement of temporaries), and then the permanent veneer bonding appointment approximately two weeks later when the lab delivers the custom porcelain shells.
Yes - this is one of veneers' greatest advantages. A single porcelain shell can simultaneously correct color (stains, tetracycline discoloration), shape (worn, short, or uneven teeth), and minor alignment issues, making them the most versatile cosmetic option available.

It’s been about 6 years since I’ve been to the Dentist due to some poor experiences in the past, and I am happy to say that my dental fears have been resolved. They were so welcoming from the second I walked in the door, through the x-rays, and cleaning. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a new dentist!Posted on Google Stephanie BachnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. UPDATE!! I will be returning and continuing services with this practice. The doctor and her assistant today gave me a warm welcome, showed confidence in what they were doing, DID NOT RUSH, were personable , and an absolute delight. My teeth feel very good. they assured me that sometimes cleanings are fast due to proper personal care/hygiene. And that my teeth are in good shape. I’m very grateful. I will happily update this rating from 3 to five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Thank you again Following up after my first visit/cleaning. Upon walking in, The receptionist was wonderful welcoming and very sweet. She has a pleasant tone , actually smiled and greeted me with inviting eye contact even tho she was on the phone at first. She quickly signed me in and told me take a seat anywhere. I love the pothos leaves and lobby. Second person of contact: The assistant, seemed nervous; and was asking me questions but not letting me finish responding before asking the next question. Maybe she thought I was younger or have never been to the dentist in my life. The questions felt rehearsed and not genuine, like they were being recited. I will say, After the X-rays everything became more comfortable. We all laughed at one point and the service went on. The Dr. was nice but I know I’ve had better cleanings. I actually commented on how fast it was? It was too fast. I was expecting to be worked on (the actual cleaning alone) for 20 min or more , not including flossing and polishing. The manual scaling was too quick and extremely light in pressure. The crevices of my biting areas were also skipped? I know my teeth are healthy. But 10000% could be healthier and is why I scheduled. I haven’t had a cleaning for two years so I know from the coffee and non tobacco related recreations I indulge, my teeth are not** brighter than pre cleaning and look the same. My previous dentist is out of regular travel now but she was exceptional took her time and gave me a thorough cleaning , I’ve been smoking and drinking coffee for 15 years and that has never compromised my finish. I don’t want to experience pain or a dentist scraping my teeth with unnecessary force for satisfaction. I’ve just simply had better cleanings. This office is very close to my residence and it’s ideal. Also it’s a nice building, clean, aesthetic is pretty. I gave Oxford Smiles a go because of convenient location and was hoping to add a more positive review. My expectations were higher as I try to lead with positivity but, besides my expectations; you all have field related experience certifications and or degrees and should be going out of the way for patients instead of only, “going through the motions.” Dental health is no joke. Thank you so much for seeing me. I’m not over the moon, yes dissatisfied, and deserve confident hygienist who enjoys each individual experience per client.Posted on Google Dean SimpsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
